At Birtley East Primary School, our music curriculum intent is to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
Our music curriculum will develop the skills of singing, playing instruments, improvising and composing music, and listening and responding to music. They will develop an understanding of the history and cultural context of the music that they listen to. Through music, our curriculum helps children develop transferable skills such as team-working, leadership, creative thinking, problem solving, decision-making and presentation and performance skills. These skills are vital to children’s development as learners and have a wider application in their general lives outside and beyond school.
At Birtley East Primary School we use Kapow Primary Music Scheme, alongside unites from BBC 12 Pieces. Each unit is carefully considered and adapted to meet the needs of our children. Kapow gives non-specialist teachers the confidence to teach music, through the detailed resources and helpful teacher videos to watch before lessons. Kapow is written as a spiral curriculum, building upon knowledge and skills taught in previous year groups. Units are chosen through careful planning to ensure all areas of the national curriculum objectives are taught.
